The 10 Fastest-Growing Restaurant Delivery Items
Restaurant delivery trends change from year to year, and 2015 was no exception. Pulling data from its online ordering system, GrubHub identified the latest trends, including popular items and other key findings.
In 2015, each of the 10 fastest-growing restaurant delivery items more than doubled in order volume versus 2014. These items include:
- Tacos al pastor
- Spicy miso ramen
- Chocolate chunk cookies
- Chicken tikka masala
- White chocolate macadamia cookies
- Buttermilk biscuits
- Tonkotsu ramen
- Pasta carbonara
- Sugar cookies
- Deep dish pizza
In addition to the fastest-growing menu items, GrubHub identified several general trends for 2015. One key trend was an increase in healthy food orders across the board. Delivery orders with health-conscious labels such as organic, paleo, gluten-free, GMO-free and grass fed spiked 18 percent in 2015. Healthy ingredients such as acai and ancient grains also showed strong growth.
Given these food trends, here are some tips to set your restaurant up for success in 2016.
Listen to customer feedback
Today’s diners have a variety of channels to share their feedback and opinions, including suggestion boxes, review aggregators, social media profiles and online ordering systems. Put a response protocol into place and take customer feedback into consideration when evaluating your menu or identifying new specials. If several customers request your restaurant make their favorite special a regular menu staple, for example, apply this feedback to show you value customers’ opinions and you’ll likely see order volume increase in no time.
Experiment with new dishes
While every food trend isn’t necessarily a fit for the type of cuisine your restaurant serves, don’t be afraid to experiment with new dishes. Consider incorporating a popular green such as kale into your salad menu or experimenting with seasonal produce such as pumpkins or summer squash. Start out by offering new and innovative items as limited-time specials, and if they’re a hit with your diners, either add them to your menu permanently or bring them back seasonally when key ingredients are at their peak.
Offer healthy menu items
As the data shows, demand for healthy menu items increases each year. However, adopting this trend doesn’t mean you need to completely revamp your menu. Instead, stick to what your customers crave and offer health-conscious diners a selection of healthy menu items or substitutions. Consider designating a section of your menu to “Lighter Fare” or “Smart Choices,” or highlighting health substitutions, such as quinoa or a side salad in place of fries.
